Clinic
Services
The clinic began as an initiative of the parishioners and local people
who were concerned about the lack of health services in the Mixco area.
Mixco is the second most populated department of Guatemala, with more
than a half million people. Most of Mixco, near the capital, Guatemala
City, is separated from the city by canyons.
[More About Guatemala]
The Department of Mixco donated the land to be used for the construction
of a health clinic. Comboni Father William Jansen successfully wrote
grants to pay for the entire construction.
Sister Sarah Mulligan, a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati, came as a
volunteer in 1994. She began working with the people who had first
initiated the project, organizing the Comité (Board of Directors), still
integrally involved.
The clinic began with a physician, receptionist, laboratory assistant,
nurse, and Sister Sarah as the administrator. Because of the great need;
the clinic has grown rapidly and provides complete outpatient health
services and education programs to a population of 160,000 residents.
The clinic has over 30,000 patients registered
Office visits with a qualified Guatemalan physician are offered
six days a week. The patients pay a minimal fee.
The Daniel Comboni Laboratory services are also available six
days a week. The charges for these services are considerably lower than
any other private or semi-private laboratory. A qualified medical
technologist directs the laboratory.
Complete Dental Services by two qualified Guatemalan dentists are
available six days a week. An important part of our dental clinic is
education and outreach to the area schools.
Services of Ultrasound and Optometrist are also available
two times a week for the patients.
Psychologist's services are available three days a week,
providing individual counseling and support to many families and
children.
